Imam Daayiee Abdullah
Progressive Islam is a celebration of Islam, says the author, Imam Daayiee Abdullah, the Executive Director of MECCA Institute. The book focuses on the Muslim faith's rich liberal ideas, including freedom, opportunity, responsibility, and cooperation.
"I realize this is not the type of Islam most people, including most Muslims, are used to," says the author. "A lot of people think that Islam is one type of thing, depending on their experiences."
By focusing on China, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, the author also presents diverse perspectives on Islam.
The book is part of MECCA Institute's research section, called Saloonaat. Because the organization's mission is to expand Progressive Islam through education and research, the book introduces major aspects of Progressive Islam.
The book is divided into five sections, including an introduction, a short autobiography of the author, the life of Prophet Muhammad, the Qur'an, and Progressive Islam.
Imam Daayiee Abdullah was born in the United States into a Christian family. When he was an adult, he traveled to China and found Islam there. After becoming Muslim, he lived in the Middle East for over 10 years in countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. He is the founder of MECCA Institute, a non-profit organization whose mission is to expand Progressive Islam through education and research. Imam Daayiee gained fame worldwide when he became the first openly gay imam in the United States. His story was featured on many media outlets, including Al-Jazeera television and The Washington Post newspaper. This is his first book.
